E-Visits at Rush FAQs

E-Visits at Rush is an easy way to connect to a health care provider online when you need care for common conditions. With an e-visit, you’ll receive treatment and have necessary prescriptions sent to your pharmacy — all completed electronically.

How e-visits work:

  1. Log into your MyChart account and submit a secure online questionnaire (including several questions, depending on your condition).
  2. Within one hour of your request, you’ll receive a MyChart message with your diagnosis and treatment plan created by a Rush University Medical Center provider.

Please note: if you make your request after our hours of operation, you’ll receive a response the next business day.

E-Visits at Rush is available to patients 18 years and older who have seen a Rush University Medical Center provider within the last three years.

What conditions can be treated by E-visits at Rush?

E-Visits at Rush is available for the following conditions: Back pain, cough, diarrhea, headache, heartburn, red eye (photo upload required), sinus problems, urinary problems and vaginal discharge/irritation. We’re working on adding additional conditions. For now, if you need treatment for a condition other than these, you can make an appointment with a provider at Rush University Medical Center or visit one of our Rush Walk-In Care locations.

Who can use E-Visits at Rush?

E-Visits at Rush is open to patients 18 and older who have seen a Rush University Medical Center provider in the last three years. To use E-Visits at Rush, you must have an active MyChart account.

How much does an e-visit cost?

E-visits cost $30. You may pay with a credit or debit card, or with a health savings account. Rush will not bill your insurance company.

How do I request an e-visit?

To request an e-visit, log in to MyChart (sign up for MyChart if you haven’t yet). Once you’ve logged into MyChart, begin an e-visit by selecting “Start an E-Visit” under Quick Links.

When are e-visits available?

E-Visits at Rush is available from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Friday, and from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on weekends. If you complete an e-visit questionnaire outside these hours, you will receive a response within an hour after e-visit services at Rush begin again at 8 a.m.

Who reviews my e-visit questionnaire and creates my treatment plan?

All questionnaires are reviewed by Rush University Medical Center providers — physicians or advanced practice providers. The name of the provider who reviews your e-visit will be listed on your diagnosis and treatment plan.

Will I be treated by my regular primary care provider?

We want to help you as quickly as possible, and your regular primary care physician isn’t always available at the moment you need care, so we can’t guarantee that they’ll treat you. You’ll always be treated by a Rush University Medical Center provider, and your regular primary care provider will have access to your diagnosis and treatment plan in your medical record.

What happens if I can’t be cared for through an e-visit?

Depending on how you answer the questionnaire you may be exited from the visit and advised to seek in-person care. However, if you do complete the questionnaire and your provider then deems you too sick for an e-visit after they’ve reviewed your medical chart, you’ll receive a message advising you to seek in-person care. After receiving that message from the provider, you’ll receive a call from a navigator within two business days to assist you in coordinating that appointment.

Will I be charged if I can’t complete care through an e-visit?

No. You’ll only be charged if you receive a diagnosis and treatment plan.

Can I get a prescription through E-Visits at Rush?

Yes. Your provider can prescribe any medications you need and send the prescriptions directly to the pharmacy of your choice.

Do I need to use a camera or video?

You never need to use video. For some conditions, we may want to see a picture to help us understand what’s going on. If needed, you can upload pictures from your mobile device or computer.

What Internet browser should I use?

MyChart works best with these internet browsers: Internet Explorer 11, Edge, Mozilla Firefox 33 and above, Safari 6 and above or Google Chrome 33 and above.

What is your privacy policy?

E-visits are available through MyChart. MyChart is owned and operated by Epic Systems Corporations and is fully complaint with federal and state laws pertaining to your privacy. Your name and email address will be treated with the same care and privacy given to your health records, and will never be sold or leased.

Can I share my account with my spouse?

No. To ensure your privacy and safety, each person must have a separate MyChart account.

Are e-visits secure?

We take great care to ensure your health information is kept private and secure. Access to information is controlled through secure activation codes, personal usernames and passwords. You control your own password, and your account cannot be accessed without that password. Further, MyChart uses the latest 128-bit SSL encryption technology with no caching to automatically encrypt your session with MyChart. Unlike conventional email, all MyChart messaging is done while you are securely logged on.
