Insurance

Figuring out your insurance coverage can be difficult. Rush participates in a number of insurance plans. Here, you’ll find a list of all participating insurance plans. Please also check with the specific hospital (below) or physician you're receiving care from for more details on accepted insurance plans.

Our financial counselors are here to help you navigate and understand your insurance coverage. Please contact us with any questions you may have.

Before visiting Rush

Before your appointment at Rush, be sure to always have your insurance card with you. This helps us keep our records accurate and up to date. It also gives us an opportunity to verify your insurance coverage and benefits. All of this helps us process your bill quickly and accurately.

It is generally a good idea to review your insurance policy and benefits before receiving medical services. Every insurance carrier is different.

And in some cases — for instance, if you are coming in for laboratory tests or a chest X-ray — you may not need to notify your insurance company. However, for many other services — such as an inpatient admission, ambulatory surgery or any invasive diagnostic test/procedure — your insurance company may require advance notice. Lack of such notification could result in reduced benefits.

Other insurance carriers — particularly Medicare and Medicaid — do not require prior notification.

Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act

The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) protects your private health information among other things. The hospital cannot release any information concerning your account to anyone but you or your legal guardian without your written permission unless specifically allowed by law.

Deductibles and co-insurance

Your deductible and co-insurance are determined by your insurance plan. A deductible is the initial amount of covered health costs that you pay before your insurance plan begins reimbursement. It is usually a set dollar amount.

The co-insurance amount is the amount agreed upon between you and your insurance company. Per your policy, you will cover a set percentage of the costs after you have met your deductible.

Processing insurance

After our medical records department has finished reviewing your account, the account is finalized and sent to Billing and then to your insurance company.

At Rush, we bill your insurance company using the information given to us by you at the time of registration. This is why it is so important that we have accurate information at the time of registration.

After your insurance company has paid, they will send both you and the hospital an explanation of benefits (EOB). This details how much they paid and what they paid for. The EOB sent to the hospital also states how much, if any, of your bill you will be responsible to pay.

After the hospital has determined any additional amount you owe, we send out a statement. This will tell you that we have billed your insurance, how much they have paid and how much you owe.

The hospital has many different ways of accepting payment. You may pay by check, cash, credit card or online. You may pay over the phone or in person, or you can send in your payment by mail. This payment is then posted to your account. Visit our billing page for more information on how to pay your bill.

Don't have insurance?

If you do not have any insurance, Rush offers a self-discount off total charges. If you cannot pay your bill at the time of service, please contact customer service at your hospital to set up an interest-free payment plan. We can offer help in applying for a government assistance program or you may qualify for our hospital assistance program, if you do not qualify for a government assistance program and cannot afford to pay your bill.

For more information, please call our customer service representatives or financial counselors at the hospital where you are receiving your care.

Helpful resources

Need health insurance?

The health insurance marketplace

The marketplace is designed to offer affordable health insurance opportunities for people that do not have health insurance through their job or a government program, such as Medicaid or Medicare.

The marketplace allows you to view and compare different health plan options offered by insurance companies, including costs, so you can select one that best suits your needs.

And depending on your income you may be eligible for financial assistance to help pay premiums and out-of-pocket costs. And, you cannot be denied coverage because of a pre-existing health problem.

Please confirm with the hospital you're receiving care at that they accept marketplace plans and that they are in-network.

Expanded Medicaid program

Illinois has expanded its Medicaid program, so more low-income adults will be eligible. Medicaid will now also cover adults without dependent children.

Eligibility

To purchase insurance on the health insurance marketplace or to be enrolled in Medicaid, you must be a U.S. citizen or legally present in the U.S. Medicaid, which is only available to low-income individuals and families. To be eligible for Medicaid, adults between the ages of 19 and 64 need to have an income of less than $15,800 for an individual and $21,400 for a couple.

Medicare

Medicare is a federal health insurance program for people 65 years or older, certain people with disabilities, and people with permanent kidney failure treated with dialysis or a transplant. Medicare has two parts: Part A, which is hospital insurance, and Part B, which is medical insurance. To apply or learn more about Medicare, please visit here
