At Rush, we understand that getting a skin cancer diagnosis can be life changing. We also know each case of skin cancer is unique. That’s why our dedicated team of specialists works closely with you to create a personalized treatment plan — and give you compassionate support before, during and after your skin cancer treatment.

As one of the leading academic medical centers in the nation, Rush is pioneering treatments, offering early detection, aggressive surveillance for melanoma patients, targeted therapies, immunotherapy combinations and minimally invasive surgeries.

Our skin cancer experts specialize in these treatments, which have helped improve outcomes for people who have skin cancers, including metastatic melanoma. In fact, six years ago, overall survival for a patient diagnosed with metastatic melanoma was about nine months. Now, with either combination targeted therapy or combination immunotherapy, overall survival rates at one year are over 80%.

At Rush, you may also have access to clinical trials that are investigating novel skin cancer treatments.

Excellence in Skin Cancer Care

A multidisciplinary team dedicated to you

Our multidisciplinary team of skin cancer specialists includes dermatologists, medical, surgical and radiation oncologists, genomics researchers and pathologists who gather regularly to hold a tumor conference to review your case. Using their collective expertise, they will develop a personalized care plan that focuses on ensuring the best possible outcome for you and maintaining your quality of life.

Leading-edge treatments and expertise in advanced-stage cancers

Rush’s experienced team of skin cancer specialists see a high volume of patients for the treatment of melanoma, one of the most aggressive types of skin cancers. But thanks to breakthroughs in diagnosis and treatment, our team of specialists has helped improve the overall outlook for patients.

Rush is one of few medical centers that offers isolated limb infusion (ILI), a minimally invasive procedure that delivers high doses of chemotherapy to an affected limb but spares the rest of the body from the toxicity of the chemotherapy. We also provide advanced treatments such as a genetically modified cancer-killing virus and aggressive immunotherapies.

Convenient locations

Because we know that early detection is important and that many people treated for skin cancer remain at increased risk for recurrence, we offer increased access for screening and prevention at a number of convenient locations including Rush University Cancer Center in Chicago, Rush Oak Brook in Oak Brook, Rush Cancer Care in Oak Park, Rush Cancer Care in Lisle and Rush Skin Cancer Services and Pinnacle Dermatology, which has about 20 locations throughout the Chicago area and Northwest Indiana.

Melanoma surveillance clinic

If you have a high risk of developing melanoma you can see our experts in the Melanoma Surveillance Clinic. The clinic uses photographic surveillance to carefully monitor high-risk patients for new or changing moles. This helps identify melanoma early when it is most curable.

“Our multidisciplinary team is made up of medical oncologists, surgical oncologists, head and neck surgeons, radiologists, plastic reconstructive surgeons and nurses who are committed to caring for you with the most compassionate, groundbreaking and innovative care.”
