Dr. Joshua J. Jacobs Named President of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons

(CHICAGO) - Dr. Joshua Jacobs, a clinician, educator, researcher, and the chairman of the department of orthopedic surgery at Rush University Medical Center, will become the 81st president of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS), on Thursday, March 21, during the AAOS annual meeting in Chicago.

Jacobs is a board-certified and practicing adult reconstructive orthopedic surgeon who specializes in total joint replacement. He has been a leading researcher on the biocompatibility, wear and corrosion of implanted joint prostheses including the impact of metal-on-metal implants for joint replacement patients. Jacobs has presented his research extensively throughout the world and has authored more than 200 peer-reviewed manuscripts, co-edited six books and co-authored more than 35 book chapters.

The AAOS president is selected by peer physician members of the academy. AAOS is the preeminent provider of musculoskeletal education to orthopedic surgeons and others in the world and engages in health policy and advocacy activities on behalf of musculoskeletal patients and the profession of orthopedic surgery. AAOS serves more than 36,000 members worldwide.

Jacobs is the William A. Hark, MD/Susanne G. Swift Professor and Chairman of the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at Rush. He has been chairman of the department of orthopedic surgery since 2008. He joined the Rush faculty in 1987.

He is also partner and member of the executive committee of Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush (a private practice) and also has an appointment as an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering in the McCormick Technological Institute at Northwestern University.

Jacobs has served in leadership positions in numerous medical societies and national committees including chair of the Council on Research, Quality Assessment and Technology of the AAOS, past president of the Orthopaedic Research Society and past president of the United States Bone and Joint Decade. He also served as a trustee of the Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation and is past chair of Committee F04 on Medical and Surgical Materials and Devices of the American Society for Testing and Materials International. He recently completed a four-year term on the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases Advisory Council and has chaired multiple National Institute of Health study sections.

In addition to his dedication as a volunteer in the orthopedic education and research community, Jacobs has won several research awards including the Ann Doner Vaughan Kappa Delta Award from the AAOS. He has presented extensively at a variety of national and international continuing medical education venues.

Jacobs received his bachelor’s degree in Materials Science and Engineering from Northwestern University and his doctorate in medicine from the University of Illinois College of Medicine. Jacobs completed his orthopedic surgery residency at the Combined Harvard Program, served as a chief resident at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, and completed his fellowship in Joint Replacement Surgery at Rush under the tutelage of Dr. Jorge Galante.
