National leaders in thoracic surgery
When it comes to thoracic surgery, experience matters. Performing more than 1,000 lung surgeries each year, thoracic surgeons at Rush are national and international leaders in performing minimally invasive and traditional approaches to diagnose and treat lung cancer, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and other cancerous and noncancerous disorders of the lungs, chest wall, esophagus and diaphragm.
Our team has the most experience in Chicago using video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS), a minimally invasive surgical procedure to diagnose and treat lung cancer and other thoracic conditions.
In fact, the Society of Thoracic Surgeons has awarded the lung cancer surgery program at Rush three stars — the highest rating possible — for lobectomy, the most common operation performed to remove lung cancers. This honor is given to only the top 5% of thoracic surgery programs in the United States and Canada. Released every six months, the 3-star rating has been awarded to Rush a total of eight consecutive times since 2015, when the star ratings were established.
As part of Rush, a leading academic medical center, our surgeons are also actively involved in research — which means you'll have access to clinical trials that are looking at new approaches to treating lung and chest tumors, as well as other thoracic diseases.

Excellence in Thoracic Surgery
Leaders in minimally invasive surgery
Thoracic surgeons at Rush have performed more video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) lobectomies than any other hospital in Illinois. Patients who undergo VATS surgeries have shorter hospital stays, less pain and faster recovery compared to traditional open surgery.
Nationally recognized as a top thoracic surgery program
For the fourth consecutive year, the Society of Thoracic Surgeons designated Rush as a three-star program for lobectomy (the most common surgery for lung cancer). This is the society’s highest ranking, given only to the top 5 percent of thoracic surgery programs in the United States. Surgeons at Rush perform more than 86 percent of lobectomies for stage I lung cancer in a minimally invasive fashion, compared to less than 50 percent nationally.
Thoracic surgeons at Rush collaborate with other specialists throughout Rush to provide the most comprehensive, advanced care possible. They are actively involved in the Coleman Foundation Comprehensive Lung Cancer Clinic — which includes medical oncologists, surgeons, radiation oncologists and other specialists, all working together to develop personalized care plans for each patient.
Leaders in precision medicine
The thoracic surgery team works closely with Tempus — a biotechnology company that analyzes your specific genetic and clinical data and provides information about how your specific cancer may respond to targeted treatments.
"Somebody being told that they may have a lung cancer is a pretty big deal. But we try to put them at ease, make sure that they know that they’re in good hands, and that we have their best interest at heart. And we’re able to help a lot more people with lung tumors these days."
