Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)

At the Rush Renée Schine Crown Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), you’ll find around-the clock neonatologists, nurses with advanced training and advanced technology. The NICU also has the space and support you and your family need to nurture and bond with your baby:

  • Individual rooms: This helps promote infection control and privacy. Rush is the only hospital in Chicago with individual rooms.
  • Nearby delivery and postpartum rooms:  After delivery, babies in crisis get immediate NICU care, and mothers recovering from childbirth can visit their babies day or night.
  • Breastfeeding assistance: Lactation specialists help mothers provide nutrient-rich breast milk to the most fragile babies.

Staff members in this level III NICU (the highest possible designation) care for the smallest and sickest babies, including preemies, twins and babies born with heart and breathing problems.
