Section of Hepatology

Rush has taken the necessary steps to ensure it's a safe place for treatment. Learn more.

The Section of Hepatology offers advanced care for patients with all forms of liver disease.

Liver disease is complicated, so it’s important to get care at a center where you have access to experts in many different areas.

Doctors in the Section of Hepatology work closely with other specialists at Rush to ensure that patients benefit from the latest diagnostic techniques and treatments:

  • For patients who need a liver transplant, the hepatology team works closely with the liver transplant program to provide personalized care and education for patients before and after surgery.
  • For patients with liver cancer, hepatologists at Rush collaborate with doctors in other areas, such as interventional radiology and liver transplant program, to create customized treatment plans. Treatment may include a special form of chemotherapy — called chemoembolization — that delivers cancer-killing drugs directly to the tumor with minimal damage to other tissues.
  • Patients with many types of liver disease benefit from access to minimally invasive endoscopic procedures that offer alternatives to surgery.

Hepatologists at Rush are also active in clinical studies of new treatments for liver disease. This means patients have early access to the latest therapies.
