All three RUSH hospitals have again received the highest possible rating from the Leapfrog Group, a nonprofit health care watchdog organization that grades hospitals on the quality and safety of care they provide.

RUSH University Medical Center, RUSH Copley Medical Center and RUSH Oak Park Hospital today received A’s in Leapfrog’s Spring 2023 Hospital Safety Grades Report, marking the fourth consecutive time all three hospitals have earned the highest possible grade.

"Straight A’s across RUSH demonstrates how providers and employees across RUSH provide the safest care possible,” said Dr. Omar Lateef, RUSH president and CEO. “Patients can expect the best from RUSH. Earning top marks from Leapfrog year after year reflects the hard work and commitment of our entire RUSH team.”

For over 20 years, the Leapfrog Group has collected, analyzed and published data on hospital safety and quality to help consumers make more informed decisions and thus accelerate performance improvement.

'Hard work and dedication'

Twice per year, it assigns letter grades to nearly 3,000 hospitals across the United States based on 30 measures that gauge rates of preventable errors, injuries and infections, and the degree to which hospitals have systems in place to prevent them. Data for these measures come from information hospitals publicly report to the federal government’s Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services, an extensive survey hospitals complete and other supplemental data sources.

“We are proud to receive another ‘A’ grade recognizing patient safety,” said John Diederich, president and CEO of RUSH Copley Medical Center. “This achievement is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our staff and their commitment to providing the highest quality of care to our patients.”

RUSH Copley Medical Center has now received A’s in 20 of the 21 sets of grades that Leapfrog has issued since it began rating hospitals for safety in 2012.

“To be recognized with the highest possible rating so consistently as a community hospital and as a health care system is a testament to the dedication of our entire team,” said Dino Rumoro, DO, MPH, FACEP, president and CEO of RUSH Oak Park. “It proves that delivering the highest quality of care in a safe environment is the standard at RUSH.”

This is RUSH Oak Park’s 14th A grade in a row and 16th overall.

RUSH University Medical Center in Chicago now has received 18 ‘A’ grades from Leapfrog and is one of only six hospitals in the U.S. — and the only one in Illinois — to appear in Vizient, Inc.’s “Quality Leadership Ranking” of top academic medical centers (No. 3 of 12 in 2022), earn Honor Roll distinction by U.S. News & World Report, earn five stars in the federal government’s Hospital Quality Star Ratings and earn a Leapfrog A.
