Group Exercise Classes

All group exercise classes are free to patients in the Rush University Cancer Center. Classes are designed to meet the needs of people facing cancer, and we'll proide modifications depending on fitness levels. Classes will be available in person (two participants max, masks required) or streamed online via Zoom.

Chair Strength

Mondays, 9 - 10 a.m. and Thursdays, noon - 1 p.m.

A gentle, instructor-led class for participants experiencing physical difficulties due to cancer treatment. Designed to increase muscle strength, range of movement and improve activities for daily living. A chair is used for seated exercises and standing support.

  • Instructors: Hannah Manella, certified clinical exercise physiologist and cancer exercise trainer

Survive Strong*

Thursdays, 9 - 10 a.m.

A low-impact strength training class focused on reducing cancer-related side effects, such as fatigue and muscle loss. Each class will consist of full-body strength exercises using either hand weights or exercise bands.

  • Instructor: Hannah Manella, certified clinical exercise physiologist and cancer exercise trainer

*Includes floor exercises: You must be able to get up and down from the floor unassisted.

Gentle Hatha Yoga*

Tuesdays, 11 a.m. - noon

This class incorporates gentle movements, postures, slow deep-breathing, meditation and relaxation. Full-body relaxation and balance are the goals, as you make a full circuit of the body’s range of motion. Our experienced instructor provides thoughtful, individualized attention, and you can adjust the practice to your own unique needs. Beginners are welcome.

Chair Yoga

Tuesdays, noon - 1 p.m.

A beginner level yoga class focused on stretching, breathing and relaxation. Practiced either sitting or using a chair for support in various postures. This class is designed to mindfully increase range of motion.

Before attending a class, you must do the following:

  • Speak with your medical oncologist to get approval and clearance to participate
  • Speak with the clinic's exercise physiologist [call (312) 563-2013] and fill out an exercise class waiver
