Breast Reconstruction Program

Innovative care from leading experts in breast reconstruction surgery

When you find out that you need surgery to treat or prevent breast cancer, life can feel anything but normal. The expert breast reconstruction team at Rush is here to help you get back to normal as quickly as possible after mastectomy or lumpectomy — and to help you feel beautiful and confident, both in your clothes and out of them.

Rush's world-renowned surgeons have developed some of the most innovative breast reconstruction techniques now in use; we're the leading center in the Chicago area for direct-to-implant reconstruction, a procedure that removes cancer and restores the breast in a single surgery. We offer a full range of reconstructive options, including the latest techniques in implant-based reconstruction and procedures that use your own tissue. And we're one of the few programs in the Chicago region to offer surgery for permanent relief of lymphedema, which can cause swelling and pain if you have lymph nodes removed as part of your breast cancer treatment.

We place our patients at the center of everything we do. We'll work closely with your breast surgeon, oncologists and other members of your treatment team to guide you through your options and make sure you have a smooth return to your normal activities.

Excellence in Breast Reconstruction

Art + science = beautiful results

In the early days of breast reconstruction, the goal was a breast that looked acceptable in clothing — but today, the Rush team's No. 1 goal is to give you beautiful, symmetrical breasts that you love and that are uniquely you.

We tailor your treatment to your unique needs with a number of techniques that include fat grafting, state-of-the-art implants, flaps and other procedures that use your own tissue.

On the leading edge of innovation

Our team leads the way in developing new, minimally invasive reconstruction techniques that provide better results, less pain and faster recovery, including single-stage, direct-to-implant procedures and prepectoral implants (placed in front of the pectoralis muscle).

We refine our approach constantly by participating in clinical trials that test new techniques — many of which were developed by surgeons at Rush — as well as studies that analyze outcomes.

And we offer advanced, personalized medicine, such as enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) protocols designed specifically for breast reconstruction patients, to minimize post-surgery pain and nausea so you're back on your feet faster.

Expert surgeons with high-tech tools

Rush breast reconstruction surgeons are all fellowship-trained, board-certified or board-eligible plastic surgeons with the highest possible level of training in their field. Their expertise, combined with state-of-the-art tools such as intraoperative fluorescence imaging, means fewer complications and excellent outcomes for our patients.

A destination for lymphedema surgery

Lymphedema, or a build-up of lymph fluid that causes swelling and pain, can be a side effect of breast cancer treatment. Rush is one of the few Chicago-area centers offering highly specialized microsurgical procedures to permanently unblock the flow of lymph fluid, relieving discomfort and restoring normal appearance. Our surgeons can even perform lymphedema surgery at the same time as your breast reconstruction, decreasing your downtime.

We work together, for you

The best breast reconstruction outcomes are the result of teamwork, so we collaborate closely with the specialists who treat your cancer, beginning as soon as you're diagnosed. And our team includes dedicated physician assistants, nurse practitioners, nurses and other specialists who focus on providing you with personalized care every step of the way.
