Study of social skills groups for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD)
Purpose of study
Therapy groups will focus on developing social skills in school-aged children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Two models of therapy will be tested: 1. A social cognitive skills group combined with the medication oxytocin - a naturally occurring hormone thought to support social connections. 2. A facilitated play group to help children interact during games and activities. The treatment you receive will be chosen by chance, like flipping a coin.
Who can participate?
Ages: 8-11 with autism spectrum disorder and their parents/caregivers; speak and understand English; talk in full sentences.
What is involved in participants?
12 weekly sessions and follow-up visits with the research team at 1 and 3-months; comprehensive evaluation including diagnostic and cognitive testing, no cost to participate and you will receive compensation for study visits.

Hippotherapy vs. Therapeutic Riding
What is hippotherapy?
Hippotherapy is a physical, occupational and speech therapy treatment strategy that utilizes equine movement. A certified therapist uses the horse's movement to provide carefully graded sensory input to improve neurological function and sensory processing. Hippotherapy has been shown to improve muscle tone, balance, posture, coordination, motor development as well as emotional well-being (American Hippotherapy Association Inc., 2007) .
What is therapeutic riding?
Therapeutic riding is appropriate for less involved (physically, mentally) clients who want social aspect of a sport along with strengthening, or as an adjunct to therapy for someone already receiving physical therapy, occupational therapy or sensory therapy. It is recommended that students are able to sit independently. Many of the inherent benefits to horseback riding (trunk strength, stretch to legs, modulation of sensory input) still apply. Equipment used typically encourages independent balance and riding positions/disciplines.
