Who can diagnose ASD?

The best practice for diagnosing autism is a multidisciplinary assessment that includes a medical evaluation, measures of intellectual or developmental ability, measures of autism symptoms, an interview to collect early developmental history, measure of self-help skills, and assessment of speech and language.

Independently licensed clinicians can make a diagnosis. We strongly recommend professionals who specialize in ASD.

What evaluations should my child receive to rule out ASD?

Your pediatrician is always your best first source of advice. Tell her your concerns and ask her if an evaluation is appropriate. Our directory has a category called Evaluations which lists a variety of infant assessment and autism evaluations.

My child has been diagnosed with ASD. What are the next steps?

It is important to share this information with other professionals in your child’s life: school, the pediatrician, any therapists involved in your child’s care.

Parent training can help you feel better equipped to assist in your child’s development.

Some parents with a new diagnosis find it helpful to speak with other parents of children with ASD. If you would like to do this, a parent support group can be a good place to start.

Do vaccines cause ASD?

No, and vaccines can protect your child and others from communicable illness.

What are EI services?

Early intervention (EI) services are state-funded intervention services provided to children under age 3. EI services are not unique to autism; they are offered to young children with delayed development. The specific therapies offered will depend on the outcome evaluation conducted by the early intervention agency. Interventions typically include developmental therapy, speech and language therapy, occupational therapy, and physical therapy.
