Rush has appointed Tae Woon Chong, MD, as chief of the Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.
A nationally recognized plastic and reconstructive surgeon, Chong brings expertise in a broad spectrum of complex reconstructive procedures, including breast reconstruction, limb salvage and lymphatic surgery.
"Dr. Chong is an exceptional leader and surgeon, and we’re honored to have him lead our plastic and reconstructive surgery team into their next phase of growth," said Alfonso Torquati, MD, chairperson of the Rush Department of Surgery and Helen Shedd Keith Professor of Surgery.
“His clinical expertise, academic accomplishments and dedication to innovation will ensure that Rush continues to set the standard for excellence in reconstructive care on a national level."
Chong earned his medical degree from the University of Virginia School of Medicine, followed by a general surgery internship at the University of Chicago. He completed his general surgery residency with the University of Virginia Health System. During that time, he also completed a research fellowship focused on transplantation and infectious disease. He then completed advanced plastic and reconstructive surgery training at University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.
Before coming to Rush, he served as division chair of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at VCU Health in Richmond, Virginia. He also previously held leadership roles at the University of Colorado and the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, contributing to the advancement of reconstructive microsurgery and surgical education.
Chong is board-certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and serves as a professor in the Department of Surgery at Rush Medical College. His clinical practice will be located at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, where he will care for patients with a broad spectrum of reconstructive needs.
