Students Find Opportunities in Service at Taste of RCSIP

The Rush Community Service Initiative Program connects students with organizations that have a mission close to their heart

Students at Rush University learned about organizations and volunteer opportunities across campus at this year's Taste of RCSIP. The event is put on by the Rush Community Service Initiative Program and gives students the opportunity to connect with organizations that have a mission close to their heart.

Medical student Layiba Chourdary shares why she is particularly interested in Ohana, a program that allows students to visit end-of-life or chronically ill hospital patients at Rush University Medical Center.

“You get to sit down with them and just be able to have a conversation and communicate with them and see what life is like for a patient at that point of their care,” Chourdary said. “I used to be a hospice care volunteer, so it is a cause that is very close to my heart.”

The event is also an opportunity for students new to Chicago to get a taste of what the city is like, from the food to the culture and life at Rush University.

“I think one of the things that makes Rush so special is that when we talk about community service, we don’t just talk the talk, we walk the walk,” says Courtney Pugh, Rush medical student. “We are in the community and I think every student is looking for that.”
