Rush University received re-accreditation from the Association for the Accreditation of Human Research Protection Programs (AAHRPP) in December 2025. AAHRPP is a non-profit organization that reviews and accredits Human Research Protection Programs (HRPP) to ensure they meet rigorous standards for quality and protection of those who participate in search studies.
“The Rush research community and administrative team have a strong commitment to creating an environment where innovative ideas can thrive,” Bethany Martell, MBA, vice president, Research Operations and CRA, said. “Attaining this accreditation reflects Rush’s dedication to excellence and commitment to being a leader in innovation through research.”
AAHRPP has 248 accredited institutions worldwide, and Rush University is one of only three in the Chicago area. Rush received its first accreditation in 2012 and has been successful in the re-accreditation process every five years.
To be accredited, an HRPPP must meet standards in the three main domains established by AAHRPP — organization, institutional review board and researcher/research staff. Each HRPP is required to provide evidence through documentation and practice. This includes policy, standard operating procedures and interviews with representatives from all three domains. This accreditation reaffirms Rush’s commitment to high-quality research and will strengthen trust between its research enterprise and participants.
“Receiving accreditation from AAHRPP would not have been possible without the support from the Rush research community,” John Cobb, director, Institutional Review Board Administration, said. “I am grateful for their significant contributions, outstanding commitment and invaluable support in advancing Rush’s research mission.”
