First-year students at Rush Medical College are one step closer to becoming a doctor. On Saturday, Aug. 15, students received their white coats and recited the Hippocratic Oath at the Marriott Marquis in Chicago.
Kylie Finkelstein, M1, Rush Medical College, knew her whole life that she wanted to help others. She went into medicine because she loves the idea of getting to meet new people and potentially change their life for the better.
“This white coat is the next step in accomplishing my dreams, which is to leave the world a better place than when I came into it,” Finkelstein says. “I will be a very happy person if I can even help just one person.”
Sam Brill, Rush Medical College, also knew from a young age that he wanted to be a doctor. He has always been interested in the way the human body moves and works. To him, the white coat is a symbol of perseverance rather than perfection.
“As I started to get more and more clinical experience, I started to realize that this is something I could really see myself doing,” Brill says. “Becoming more in love with the science just made me want to continue to give back.”
Brill and Finkelstein say they both came to Rush for its involvement in the community.
“I wanted something that was the perfect mix of being embedded in the community and also excelling clinically,” Brill says. “Rush gave me that perfect blend in an urban environment that I wanted to be a part of and where I hopefully see myself practicing medicine in the future.”
