Rush University is excited to announce that Jason Turner, PhD, MAE, has been appointed as the next Dean for the College of Health Sciences. Dr. Turner assumed the role of dean on December 7 and will report to the provost and president.

“Dr. Turner’s experience in academic leadership makes him an excellent fit for Rush University and the College of Health Sciences,” says Robert S.D. Higgins, MD, MSHA, president, Rush University. “His work in program development, accreditation, competency assessment, as well as his research and scholarship in population health management and health care finance make him a highly prepared and exceptional leader for CHS.”

Dr. Turner received his Bachelor’s degree in Human Biology/Health Administration and Policy from Stanford University. He then received his master’s degree in Applied Economics and PhD in Health Services Organization and Policy (finance cognate) from the University of Michigan—Ann Arbor where he was an Agency for Research and Quality (AHRQ) predoctoral fellow and was later supported through the Kidney Epidemiology Cost Center.

Dr. Turner joined Rush in 2018 and served as the interim dean for CHS since early 2024, where he was successful in overseeing 10 academic departments, with many that include programs that are recognized among the nation’s best by U.S. News & World Report.

During his time as interim dean, CHS has completed a five-year strategic plan focused on enhancing the student, faculty and staff experience as well as strengthening its research enterprise. The plan includes new academic offerings, new partnerships and prioritizes student, faculty and staff experience and support.

In addition to his role as interim dean, Dr. Turner has served as interim vice provost in the Office of Faculty Affairs and as a professor for the Health Systems Management program within CHS. Prior to entering academia, he spent a number of years in the health care sector as a controller for a large, national health care insurer and administrator for a hospital chain.

“I am honored to accept the opportunity to be the next dean for the College of Health Sciences,” says Dr. Turner. “The College of Health Sciences is an exceptional part of the university with students, faculty and staff who are dedicated to excellence and innovation. I look forward to continuing work that fosters an environment for growth and successful learning.”

Dr. Turner will look to build upon his success as interim dean. As dean, he will oversee the enhancement of existing and development of new educational offerings as well as research and community engagement initiatives that advance health and wellness across the communities we serve. The dean will provide visionary leadership to promote academic excellence, innovation, and equity in health sciences education and practice. Dr. Turner will also lead in student and faculty recruitment, advocate for CHS, manage financial resources and ensure compliance with accreditation standards and quality improvement.

Please join me in congratulating Dr. Turner as our next College of Health Sciences dean.
