About the Center for Trauma Recovery

Trauma leaves a mark. Nightmares, flashbacks, anxiety and difficulty trusting others are common signs of PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder). These symptoms are more treatable than most people realize.

The Center for Trauma Recovery offers evidence-based therapy at no cost for adults living with trauma or PTSD. Our licensed clinicians specialize in cognitive processing therapy, or CPT, a proven talk therapy that helps you understand and work through the impact of trauma. Over 80% of our patients experience meaningful improvement within just 10 sessions.

Want faster relief? Most of our patients see their therapist multiple times a week, completing treatment in as little as two to six weeks.

All services are provided at no cost to all patients, regardless of insurance status. Our program is supported by grants and philanthropic funding so that cost is never a barrier to care. We also offer care management to help connect you with housing resources, medical services, food assistance and other community resources.

Todos nuestros servicios también están disponibles en español. Si tiene interés, llame al (312) 942-1574.

FAQs About the Center for Trauma Recovery

PTSD can show up in many ways: flashbacks, nightmares, feeling constantly on edge, avoiding people or places that remind you of what happened or feeling numb and disconnected from your own life. These are real, recognized symptoms, and they are highly treatable. Common causes of PTSD include violence, accidents, sexual assault, childhood abuse and other overwhelming life events. If any of these sound familiar, contact us. Our team can help you figure out next steps.

In CPT, you will talk with your therapist about one or more traumatic events. But unlike some other approaches, you do not need to recount every detail of what happened. CPT focuses on working through the beliefs that trauma left behind: guilt, self-blame and the sense that nowhere is safe anymore. It is designed to be both effective and manageable. Over 80% of our patients notice real improvement within just 10 sessions.

We hear this often, and it is a fair question. CPT is designed to be focused and time-limited. That is part of what makes it effective. Research consistently shows that a structured, targeted approach produces faster and more lasting relief than open-ended therapy. Your clinician will work with you to build a plan around your specific needs and schedule, including the option for our accelerated format so you can start feeling better sooner.
