'If I need help my coworkers will be there for me.'
What I enjoy most about Rush are my coworkers and the people I teach. I don’t feel as if I am on my own here.
Sergio joined the Rush team in August 2019. He chose Rush because of the people with whom he interviewed. "The care and passion I saw in their faces left me feeling that this is where I want to work," he says.
After only a short time on the job, Sergio knew his original hunch about Rush was right.
Sergio says what he enjoys most about his job are his coworkers and the people he teaches. "I don’t feel as if I am on my own here," he says. "If I have questions, I can ask them, and if I need help my coworkers will be there for me."
During the COVID crisis, Sergio says he "saw nothing but the very best at Rush." Among other things, he appreciated town hall meetings, where the leadership team shared regular updates about the effect of the coronavirus on patient care and hospital operations, as well as up-to-the-minute information about the virus itself from in-house medical experts.
A veteran of the United States Army, Sergio is part of a veterans' resource group at Rush, as well as a disability inclusion group. Of these groups, Sergio says, "They help me grow my network and meet other people outside my immediate work area. This opens me up to new opportunities and has helped me find other like-minded employees throughout our campus."
About Rush's I CARE values — innovation, collaboration, accountability, respect and excellence — Sergio says, "These are values I honor as well, and to see them applied to work done here at Rush is incredible.
"We are reviewed, in part, based on how we live up to these values," he goes on. "I believe this fosters an environment of hard work and team effort so that we may provide some of the best medical care in the country."
