Over Memorial Day weekend, a remarkable young woman with a complex medical diagnosis was admitted. She needed an organ transplant, but unfortunately, she was not a candidate. She had the unwavering support of her long-term partner and dedicated family members who visited her regularly. After a thoughtful goal of care discussion with the medical intensive care unit, or MICU, team about her poor prognosis, the patient made the courageous decision to stop curative treatment and instead shift her focus to cherishing quality time with her loved ones. One of her final wishes was to marry her partner.
With her critical condition in mind, the MICU staff rallied together to make this dream reality with only a few hours’ notice. Nurses and patient care technicians transformed her room into a beautiful space filled with decorations and music the patient and her partner enjoyed. The Rush kitchen graciously provided a cake, and a Rush chaplain officiated the touching ceremony.
The event allowed the couple to share their love story with family and medical staff gathered around, creating a cherished memory in her final days. It was a poignant reminder of love, joy and the power of togetherness even in the toughest of times.
