Rush University Medical Center Department of Psychiatry in Chicago, Illinois, provides comprehensive inpatient and outpatient programs and services.

SERVICES

The Department of Psychiatry at Rush offers clinical services for patients of various ages and diagnoses:

  • Dedicated inpatient and outpatient programs for patients with depression, anxiety, bipolar, psychotic and related disorders
  • Autism Assessment, Research, Treatment and Services (AARTS) Program
  • A full range of services for patients with medical conditions that may cause or exacerbate emotional, neuropsychiatric or cognitive problems
  • Care for children and adolescents with mental illness, including a dedicated child and adolescent inpatient psychiatry unit and outpatient clinic
  • Assessment and treatment of older adults with mental illness, including a specialized inpatient unit for older adults with psychological, cognitive and behavioral difficulties
  • Alcohol and substance abuse assessment and treatment
  • Veteran's PTSD clinic

Treatment modalities include the following:

  • Cognitive behavioral therapies, including group, couple and individual
  • Complex psychopharmacologic therapy
  • Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS)
  • Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT)
  • Individual and group psychotherapy
Leadership Team

The department is staffed by psychiatrists and other mental health professionals who are known throughout Chicago and across the nation for their efforts to treat and study depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety disorders and many other forms of psychiatric illness.

Robert B. Shulman, MD, is associate chairperson of the Department of Psychiatry.

Adult Psychiatric Inpatient Services: The Adult Inpatient Units at Rush are devoted to treating adult patients with a variety of psychiatric disorders, including mood disorders and psychotic disorders.

Adult Psychiatric Outpatient Services: Program provides expert diagnostic and specialty treatment services for a range of psychiatric disorders including depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, psychosis, and addictions. State of the art and innovative treatment modalities are provided including pharmacotherapy, individual,group and marital/family therapy and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS).

AARTS Program: The AARTS Program at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, Illinois, provides a list of resources - including services and support - for children and families affected by autism and related disorders to improve their development and quality of life.

Center for Compulsive Behavior and Addiction: The Center for Compulsive Behavior and Addiction at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, Illinois, promotes basic neuroscience, translational research and clinical intervention for human addictive and compulsive behaviors, including ADHD, gambling, eating disorders and drug and alcohol abuse.

Center for Women's Behavioral and Mental Health: Treats a variety of issues specific to women including pregnancy and parenting concerns, reproductive or sexual health issues, recovery from physical or sexual violence, and stress management.

Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Inpatient Unit: The Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Inpatient Unit at Rush University Medical Center provides compassionate comprehensive assessment, therapeutic and educational services to children and adolescents exhibiting emotional or behavioral disturbances.

Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Outpatient Program: The Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Outpatient Program at Rush, provides evaluation and treatment to help young people address and overcome emotional and behavioral problems.

Cognitive Therapy: The Department of Psychiatry at Rush University Medical Center pioneered the combined use of cognitive therapy and pharmacologic treatment. Cognitive therapy continues to be a major treatment modality at Rush, both for inpatients and for outpatients.

Depression Treatment & Research Center: The Woman's Board Depression Treatment & Research Center at Rush University Medical Center provides through its clinical research program, innovative medical treatment that is generally not available in conventional psychiatric practice.

Psychiatry and Medicine: This program provides compassionate and leading-edge interventions for patients receiving care on non-psychiatric inpatient units with emotional, neuropsychiatric or cognitive problems that are caused or exacerbated by medical, surgical, neurological, obstetrical or gynecological conditions.

Rush Addiction Medicine Program: This program, led by Gail Basch, MD, provides evaluation and treatment for individuals with a range of addictive disorders including alcoholism, drug abuse and dependence, compulsive gambling, internet addiction, compulsive shopping, overeating disorders and sexual addiction.

Rush Day Hospital: The Rush Day Hospital (RDH) in Chicago, Illinois, is an intensive group-based program which offers partial hospitalization (PHP), intensive outpatient (IOP) & group therapy during day & evening hours. RDH programs provide individualized treatment within a dynamic treatment environment.
