A cancer virtual second opinion at Rush allows you to get an expert second opinion from a Rush cancer specialist without an in-person visit. A virtual second opinion consists of a one-on-one, two-way video consultation with a cancer specialist, including a review of your records or imaging.
Virtual second opinions at Rush are available for cancer and thoracic surgery. Give us a call, and we'll walk you through all of your treatment options.
How Does a Virtual Second Opinion Work?
You can start your virtual second opinion from home at any time. To get started, take the following steps:
- Call us at (888) 352-RUSH (7874) to start your virtual second opinion. A member of our team will collect your information and help you get your health records together.
- We’ll schedule you for a video visit with our care team within just a few days.
- Meet with a Rush cancer care provider over two-way video chat. They’ll walk you through all of your treatment options.
Video visits are conducted on the My Rush app, available for free on the App Store or Google Play. Video visits are currently covered by insurance, with equal coverage to an in-person visit.
The virtual care second opinion process usually takes one to two weeks, depending on when we receive your records. Our care team will connect with you right away, and if your records are available electronically, your virtual second opinion may be complete in as little as 72 hours.
If you choose to come to Rush after your video consultation, we'll help you set up your appointments with the specialists you need.

Why Get a Second Opinion
If you have been diagnosed with cancer, you may want to get a cancer second opinion from another doctor before you begin treatment. A second opinion can help you confirm your diagnosis and fully explore potential treatment options.
Patients who have cancer commonly seek a second opinion. Talking to another specialist helps empower you to make decisions about your care based on fully understanding all of your options. Some health plans actually require a second opinion, especially when a doctor recommends surgery or an experimental therapy.
