How Does a Virtual Second Opinion Work?

You can start your virtual second opinion from home at any time. To get started, take the following steps:

  1. Call us at (888) 352-RUSH (7874) to start your virtual second opinion. A member of our team will collect your information and help you get your health records together.
  2. We’ll schedule you for a video visit with our care team within just a few days.
  3. Meet with a Rush cancer care provider over two-way video chat. They’ll walk you through all of your treatment options.

Video visits are conducted on the My Rush app, available for free on the App Store or Google Play. Video visits are currently covered by insurance, with equal coverage to an in-person visit.

If you choose to come to Rush after your video consultation, we'll help you set up your appointments with the specialists you need.

Why Get a Second Opinion

If you have been diagnosed with cancer, you may want to get a cancer second opinion from another doctor before you begin treatment. A second opinion can help you confirm your diagnosis and fully explore potential treatment options.

Patients who have cancer commonly seek a second opinion. Talking to another specialist helps empower you to make decisions about your care based on fully understanding all of your options. Some health plans actually require a second opinion, especially when a doctor recommends surgery or an experimental therapy.

Why Choose Rush

At Rush, you will receive compassionate and supportive cancer care. As one of the leading academic health systems in the country, Rush offers the most advanced cancer care, including immunotherapies, targeted therapies and minimally invasive surgical options.

Frequently Asked Questions About Virtual Second Opinions

For more information about how your virtual second opinion will work, take a look at the information below, covering frequently asked questions about the service.

When should I get a second opinion?

Understandably, you may feel like your diagnosis of cancer is a medical emergency. But there’s almost always time to get a second opinion. Your doctor can tell you how quickly your cancer needs to be addressed.

If your cancer doesn't have to be treated immediately, try to get a second opinion before you start your first treatment. Another doctor or hospital may have options, such as new therapies available through clinical trials, that are better for you.

Depending on record collection, we may be able to complete your virtual second opinion within 72 hours.

Who is eligible for a virtual second opinion?

Virtual second opinions are currently only available to Illinois residents. Any Illinois resident who has received a cancer diagnosis or a second opinion recommendation from a provider is eligible.

What is the cost of a virtual second opinion?

A virtual second opinion is currently covered by insurance the same as an in-person appointment. Most insurance plans do cover second opinions and, most likely, your visit cost will be your standard specialist co-pay. Contact your insurance company for more details.

How long does the virtual second opinion process take?

The virtual care second opinion process usually takes one to two weeks, depending on when we receive your health records. If your records are available electronically, your virtual second opinion may be complete in as little as three days.

What if I would rather visit Rush for an in-person appointment?

We offer virtual second opinions as a convenient option for patients who don’t prefer or are unable to travel to Rush. If you would prefer to schedule an in-person visit, please call us at (312) CANCER-1.

Is my medical and payment information secure?

We take great care to ensure your health information is kept private and secure. Access to information is controlled through secure activation codes and personal usernames and passwords. You control your own password, and your account cannot be accessed without that password. Unlike conventional email, all MyChart messaging is done while you are securely logged on. We also take great care with any physical records you may send in as part of your opinion.

Who will perform my virtual second opinion?

Virtual second opinions are performed completely by cancer providers at Rush, never by a third party.
