Rush Adult Congenital Heart Center

Thanks to medical advances, more and more people born with heart disease, known as congenital heart disease (CHD), are reaching adulthood and living full lives.

But even when the defect or defects are successfully repaired, adults with congenital heart disease — especially complex defects — need lifelong monitoring and care for several important reasons:

  • They may require additional operations or medications
  • They often face long-term health problems, including arrhythmias, developmental delays, heart failure and sudden cardiac death
  • They have significantly higher rates of emergency room visits, hospitalizations and intensive care unit stays than adults without congenital heart disease
  • They often live long enough to develop new problems that can affect their health, such as high blood pressure, obesity and coronary artery disease

If you are an adult with congenital heart disease, you can get the specialized, personalized care you need through the Rush Adult Congenital Heart Center. Cardiologists in the center will partner with you to provide treatment as needed, prevent future heart problems, and help improve your overall health and well-being.

Children who are treated through the Rush Pediatric Congenital Heart Disease Program can easily transition into the adult program, ensuring continuity of care.
