Rush University Medical Center’s multidisciplinary team of physiatrists, neurosurgeons, neuromuscular specialists and plastic surgeons combines experience and expertise with the latest in medical advances to provide timely diagnoses and coordinated, comprehensive care for patients afflicted with peripheral nerve injuries and tumors.
Given the varying complexity and severity of these disorders, patients with peripheral nerve injuries and tumors tend to be diagnosed late or misdiagnosed altogether. As a result, they often receive delayed care, which hinders their chances to restore or regain their nerve function.
After receiving an initial evaluation, patients may work with Rush physiatrists to recover nerve function through rehabilitation. In some cases, patients may become immediate candidates for surgery, such as nerve and tendon transfers or tumor resection. Patients may then require additional postoperative rehabilitation, if necessary.
Who are ideal candidates to be seen in the clinic?
Given the time-sensitive nature of restoring or improving nerve function, patients are ideally seen as early as possible after a traumatic event with known nerve injury or after the diagnosis of a non-traumatic nerve injury or tumor is made.
