In April 2020, the Rush University Medical Group Float Pool Team was instrumental in opening the COVID-19 Drive-Thru. Initially housed in the alley between the Academic and Professional Office Buildings, the team helped ensure the safe, rapid testing of patients and individuals from the community. The COVID-19 Drive-Thru eventually moved to its final location on the ground floor of the parking structure, where it remained open through March 2022.

During the nearly two-year period it was open, the COVID-19 Drive-Thru tested symptomatic and asymptomatic patients, employees who had exposure, as well as patients who required a PCR test before a procedure. When the COVID-19 vaccine became readily available, the team mobilized to begin providing second doses and boosters to eligible Rush patients.

The team saw an average of over 100 patients per day and more than 40,000 patients were seen in total. Despite their encounters with patients being relatively brief, many staff members received nominations for the Medical Assistant Shooting Star Award or had letters written to leaders about their kind and compassionate care.

The COVID-19 Drive-Thru team worked tirelessly throughout FY21 and continues to augment the efforts of Rush to support our patients, community and staff throughout the pandemic.
