School-Based Behavioral Services

The American Academy of Pediatrics recognizes that emotional, behavioral and relationship problems can affect and interfere with children’s academic performance. School-based behavioral specialists at Rush University Children’s Hospital work with children ages 6 to 18 to address these issues at school.

Our school-based behavioral pediatrician creates personalized management plans for school-based behavioral struggles. Rush offers diagnosis, monitoring and treatment of underlying conditions that often cause these issues and affect performance. Some of the conditions addressed in the clinic include the following:

  • Executive function deficits, such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
  • Learning disorders and school-related processing problems
  • Emotional regulation difficulties, such as anxiety and depression
  • High-functioning autism and Asperger’s syndrome)

Specialists at Rush take a multidisciplinary approach to addressing your child’s needs. They work closely with children, families, schools and therapists to consider all aspects of your child’s well-being when developing a treatment plan.

Some treatments may include the following:

  • Behavioral strategies and mindfulness exercises
  • Executive function skills
  • Educational advocacy, including recommendations for accommodations and services at school
  • Referrals to outside skilled behavioral therapists
  • Medication management
