In the past two years, $500,000 has been raised to support neuroradiology fellows at Rush University Medical Center in honor of Michael Huckman, MD, the former director of Rush’s Section of Neuroradiology and a pioneer in the field. The milestone was announced in November during the 104th Scientific Assembly and Annual Meeting of the Radiological Society of North America.

Funds generated through the Michael S. Huckman, MD, Endowed Fellowship Fund will enable neuroradiology fellows to conduct pilot projects, publish findings in journals, participate in academic conferences, and further study and develop leading-edge diagnostic techniques. Thanks to the support and leadership of Sharon Byrd, MD, the Colonel Robert R. McCormick Professor of Diagnostic Imaging and Chair of the Department of Diagnostic Radiology and Nuclear Medicine at Rush, as well as Affiliated Radiology, Rush's innovative imaging technology physician group, and other contributors, the endowed fellowship was established in honor of Huckman’s legacy and commitment to medical education.

In his venerable career, Huckman epitomized the roles of physician, professor and academic. As the longtime director of the Section of Neuroradiology, he led the clinical fellowship program at Rush and mentored dozens of students on the diagnosis and characterization of neurologic abnormalities. As an academic, Huckman conducted research into neuroimaging of degenerative brain diseases. He authored more than 140 papers, book chapters and editorials, many of which are considered seminal to the field.

Committed to service and mentorship at Rush and beyond, Huckman was a leader in many professional organizations. He served as president of the American Society of Neuroradiology and the World Federation of Neuroradiological Societies and as editor-in-chief of the American Journal of Neuroradiology. Huckman has received the Gold Medals of the Radiological Society of North America and the American Society of Neuroradiology and has been made an honorary member of the neuroradiological societies of India, Japan and Turkey, the Radiological Society of Brasilia, and the European Society of Neuroradiology.
