The doctors at Rush saved my life.
My husband and I were leaving for tennis when I started feeling ill. I decided to stay home and rest. I woke up with no memory and couldn’t walk. My internist sent me to straight to Rush.
I was eventually diagnosed with tuberculous meningitis, a rare disease both in the U.S. and in Switzerland, where I grew up. I had surgery to insert a shunt into my brain. My memory returned, but as you can imagine, we were still very worried. Fortunately my neurologist, Dr. Jonathan Cheponis (above right), was by my side reassuring us.
He and Dr. Michael Lin (above left), an infectious disease specialist, made a plan to fight my infection. Drs. Cheponis and Lin are simply marvelous. They are so talented and thorough. You can really tell they care about you.
My treatment and recovery were challenging — I had to relearn how to walk and talk, but I knew we could beat this together.
After two years, I am back to running my art business, playing tennis and traveling. I could not be more grateful to Drs. Cheponis and Lin for making my recovery a reality. My donation to Rush for Doctors’ Day is one small way I can give back to these dedicated and compassionate doctors.
From Pado's doctors
"It is truly rewarding to know that I’ve made a difference in someone’s life," said Lin. "Each day I am thankful for the patients and families whose generosity and kind words contribute to our success."
"I am so touched to be recognized for Doctors’ Day. I am also grateful to have such amazing and generous patients," said Cheponis. "Their gifts make a real difference for all of us at Rush."
If a Rush doctor has made a difference in your life, please join Pado in honoring them with a gift for Doctors’ Day. When you give to Rush, you are giving hope to a patient like me that they will recover, even from the rarest of diseases. Please make your gift today.
