Parainfluenza 1, 2, 3 Virus Culture

CERNER / EPIC MNEMONIC: C VIR
POE DESCRIPTION: CU VIRUS; C VIR
CPT CODE: 87252
CDM NUMBER: 3481056
TEST INFORMATION: The test includes concurrent culture for other respiratory viruses (i.e. Influenza, Adenovirus, and Respiratory Syncytial Virus).
DAYS PERFORMED: Monday-Saturday
TURNAROUND TIME: 14 days
CONTAINER TYPE: Sealed sterile container, viral transport medium
COLLECTION: Infants and small children: soft catheters and suction devices (syringes and suction bulbs) can be used to collect nasal secretions (the optimal specimen) as the catheter is withdrawn from far back in the nose. The collection method of choice is to introduce 3-7 mL of sterile saline into the child`s posterior nasal cavity and immediately aspirate the fluid. Specimens MUST then be placed into the viral transport medium (available from the Clinical Microbiology Laboratory).
SPECIMEN REQUIREMENTS: Throat washes, nasopharyngeal washes and secretions
REJECTION CRITERIA: Inappropriate specimen container, specimen NOT submitted in viral transport medium, specimen NOT refrigerated during transport, excessive delay in transport.
MINIMUM VOLUME: 1 mL
HANDLING INSTRUCTIONS: Specimen should be transported as soon as possible. When transportation is delayed, refrigerate. Keep specimens cold and moist. Do NOT freeze.
REFERENCE RANGE: No virus isolated
METHODOLOGY: Inoculation of specimens into cell cultures, incubation, observation for hemadsorption or characteristic cytopathic effect, and identification/speciation by fluorescent monoclonal antibodies specific for Parainfluenza types 1, 2, or 3.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: The direct fluorescent monoclonal antibody method allows specific typing of the Parainfluenza virus.
TEST SYNONYM(S):Viral Culture, Parainfluenza Virus
