TEST INFORMATION: Test includes shell vial cell cultures; conventional cell cultures; and immunofluorescence staining.
DAYS PERFORMED: Monday-Saturday
TURNAROUND TIME: 48 hours, shell vials; 7 days, cell culture. Preliminary culture reports available after 48 hours.
SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS: Specimen must be received by the laboratory no later than 0800 in order to receive shell vial results after 48 hours.
CONTAINER TYPE: Sterile container, cold (Flex-Trans®) viral transport medium for swabs, lavender top Vacutainer® (EDTA) tube for blood
SPECIMEN REQUIREMENTS: Urine, bronchoalveolar lavage, blood, tracheal aspirates, autopsy, tissue biopsy specimens
REJECTION CRITERIA: Dry specimen, specimen not submitted in viral transport medium, specimen not refrigerated during transport, specimen not submitted in a sterile container, excessive delay in transport to Clinical Microbiology.
MINIMUM VOLUME: 1 mL fluid, 7 mL blood, small piece of tissue
HANDLING INSTRUCTIONS: Specimen must be transported as soon as possible. Keep specimen cold and moist. When transportation is delayed, refrigerate.
REFERENCE RANGE: No CMV detected/isolated
METHODOLOGY: Test includes inoculation of cell cultures in shell vials, 48-hour incubation, and immunofluorescence staining of CMV antigens with monoclonal antibodies.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: CMV infections are very common and are usually asymptomatic. However, in immunocompromised patients, including organ recipients and AIDS patients, CMV infections may be severe and life-threatening. CMV is the most frequent cause of congenital viral infections in humans and occurs in approximately 1% of newborns. Approximately 90% have no clinical symptoms at birth. Ten to 20% of these infants will develop complications before school age. Congenital infection may occur as a result of either primary or recurrent maternal infection.
