TEST INFORMATION: Test includes wet preparation (saline), concentration, and Trichrome stain (if sufficient quantity).
DAYS PERFORMED: Daily, 24 hours; however, test performed Monday-Saturday only.

CONTAINER TYPE:

COLLECTION: Specimens are to be collected from a site prepared utilizing aseptic technique. Overlying and adjacent areas must be carefully prepared to eliminate surface organisms. Ideally, material obtained by needle aspiration through intact surface, which has been cleaned with antiseptic, is injected into a sterile container.
SPECIMEN REQUIREMENTS: Cerebrospinal fluid
REJECTION CRITERIA: Inappropriate specimen container, insufficient specimen volume.
MINIMUM VOLUME: 1 mL
HANDLING INSTRUCTIONS: Specimen should be transported as soon as possible. When transportation is delayed, leave at room temperature.
REFERENCE RANGE: No parasites found
LIMITATIONS OF TEST: Wet preparation exams for motile ameba observation cannot be performed on specimens which arrive in the Clinical Microbiology laboratory more than 30 minutes after collection.
METHODOLOGY: Direct wet preparation (saline), concentration method, Trichrome stained smear (if sufficient quantity).
