CPT CODE: 87102; 87206
TEST INFORMATION: The test includes centrifugation of the specimen with inoculation of the sediment to appropriate fungal media and performance of a fungal smear.
DAYS PERFORMED: Daily, 24 hours
TURNAROUND TIME: Smear results: same day if the specimen is received in the laboratory no later than 1400. Preliminary culture reports are available after 1 week or when a fungal isolate is detected. Culture reports will be finalized after 4 weeks.
CONTAINER TYPE: Sealed sterile urine container, no preservative.
SPECIMEN REQUIREMENTS: Voided urine, midstream urine, clean catch urine, suprapubic puncture urine, catheterized urine, cystoscopic urine, bladder urine
REJECTION CRITERIA: Inappropriate specimen container, specimen received in a preservative, insufficient specimen volume, urine specimen submitted in a boric acid transport tube. Only one specimen will be accepted per day unless a routine collected specimen and an invasive type specimen (i.e. suprapubic, cystoscopic, etc.) are submitted.
MINIMUM VOLUME: 2 mL
HANDLING INSTRUCTIONS: Specimen should be transported as soon as possible. When transportation is delayed, refrigerate.
REFERENCE RANGE: No fungi observed/isolated
METHODOLOGY: Fungal smear: calcofluor white stain. Culture: Conventional culture utilizing media specifically formulated for fungal isolation.
