POE DESCRIPTION: OVA AND PARASITES EXAM; O & P; OP
CPT CODE: 87177; 88313
TEST INFORMATION: The test includes a wet preparation (saline) and concentration procedure.
DAYS PERFORMED: Daily, 24 hours
TURNAROUND TIME: Preliminary reports available after 24 hours. Complete reports may require 2-4 days after receipt of the specimen based upon the findings.
CONTAINER TYPE: Sealed, sterile urine container, no preservative
SPECIMEN REQUIREMENTS: Freshly voided urine
REJECTION CRITERIA: Specimen received more than 4 hours after collection, refrigerated specimen, insufficient specimen volume, inappropriate specimen container, specimen submitted in a urine boric acid transport tube.
MINIMUM VOLUME: 15 mL
HANDLING INSTRUCTIONS: Specimen should be transported as soon as possible. When transportation is delayed, leave at room temperature. Specimen MUST be received within 4 hours.
REFERENCE RANGE: No parasites found
LIMITATIONS OF TEST: A single negative result does not rule out the possibility of parasitic infection.
METHODOLOGY: Wet preparation (saline) and concentration.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: The patient should have geographic history consistent with schistosomiasis. The recommended screening procedure is three first morning urine specimens submitted on successive days. Click here for more information on schistosomiasis
