TEST INFORMATION: The test includes inoculation of a tissue culture followed by determination of susceptibility to acyclovir and/or foscarnet. Resistant isolates are confimed by a plaque assay.
DAYS PERFORMED: Monday-Friday
TURNAROUND TIME: 10 days from viral isolation
SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS: The Clinical Microbiology Laboratory MUST be notified verbally by the physician of the request.
CONTAINER TYPE: Sealed sterile container, no preservative
SPECIMEN REQUIREMENTS: Herpes simplex virus isolate. Referred virus isolate or submitted specimen (genital, CSF, sputum, and/or brain biopsy tissue)
REJECTION CRITERIA: Virus non-viable; virus not isolated
MINIMUM VOLUME: 2 mL fluid, 1 gram tissue
HANDLING INSTRUCTIONS: Call the Clinical Microbiology Laboratory for transportation information.
REFERENCE RANGE:

Sensitive: acyclovir: <3 µg/mL; µg/mL; foscarnet: < 100 µg/mL</p/>

METHODOLOGY: Inoculation of cell culture with isolate. Colorimetric screen with plaque assay confirmation.
