PCR for Bordetella pertussis and Bordetella parapertussis (View in report form.)
CERNER / EPIC MNEMONIC:
87081 - Performed at IDPH - No Fee
Test includes identification of Bordetella pertussis and Bordetella parapertussis ONLY. Susceptibility testing will NOT be performed.
Daily, 24 hours
Sterile rayon or dacron swab or nasopharyngeal secretions in closed sterile plastic cup (available from Clinical Microbiology Laboratory)
Nasopharyngeal aspirates/washes are the optimal specimen. Alternatively, a flexible rayon or dacron swab may be used to obtain a nasopharyngeal specimen. Shape the flexible swab into the contour of the nares and into the nasopharynx. Pass the swab gently through the nose. Leave the swab in place near the septum and floor of the nose for 15-30 seconds. Rotate the swab and remove. Insert the swab into the sterile cup.
Nasopharyngeal aspirate, wash, or swab
Improperly labeled specimen, incorrect specimen
Specimen should be transported as soon as possible. When transportation is delayed, leave at room temperature.
No. B. pertussis identified; No B. parapertussis identified
LIMITATIONS OF TEST:
PCR does not differentiate viable from non-viable organisms.
