TEST INFORMATION: Test includes identification of Bordetella pertussis and Bordetella parapertussis ONLY. Susceptibility testing will NOT be performed.
DAYS PERFORMED: Daily, 24 hours
TURNAROUND TIME:

7 days

SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS:

 

CONTAINER TYPE: Sterile rayon or dacron swab or nasopharyngeal secretions in closed sterile plastic cup (available from Clinical Microbiology Laboratory)
COLLECTION: Nasopharyngeal aspirates/washes are the optimal specimen. Alternatively, a flexible rayon or dacron swab may be used to obtain a nasopharyngeal specimen. Shape the flexible swab into the contour of the nares and into the nasopharynx. Pass the swab gently through the nose. Leave the swab in place near the septum and floor of the nose for 15-30 seconds. Rotate the swab and remove. Insert the swab into the sterile cup.
SPECIMEN REQUIREMENTS: Nasopharyngeal aspirate, wash, or swab
REJECTION CRITERIA:

Improperly labeled specimen, incorrect specimen

MINIMUM VOLUME: One swab
HANDLING INSTRUCTIONS: Specimen should be transported as soon as possible. When transportation is delayed, leave at room temperature.
REFERENCE RANGE: No. B. pertussis identified; No B. parapertussis identified
LIMITATIONS OF TEST:

PCR does not differentiate viable from non-viable organisms.
