Annual Back to School Health Fair Offers Free Immunizations and Physicals to Help Students Get Ready for School Year

(CHICAGO) ― Free immunizations and physicals are among the services available at the eighth annual citywide RU Caring Back to School Health Fair from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, July 27, at Malcolm X College (MXC), 1900 W. Jackson Blvd.

The event is hosted by RU Caring, a community service program run by Rush University students. Co-sponsors include Alderman Bob Fioretti and the Chicago Department of Public Health.

Students of all ages are welcome to participate. Rush employees, physicians, nurses and students volunteer their time and expertise to provide school physicals, vision and hearing screenings, dental exams and update immunizations for the start of the school year. In addition, students will be able to play games and win a limited number of school supplies.

Research shows that healthy students have better attendance and perform better in school. Physicals and updated immunizations are required for students entering kindergarten, first grade, fifth grade and ninth grade (ages 5, 10 and 15 for ungraded programs). Students enrolling in Illinois schools for the first time and children up to 6 years old entering preschool are also required to have a physical exam and updated immunizations.

This event adds to Rush’s partnership with nearby MXC. Rush, through Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s new College to Careers program, is working with MXC to help train people for jobs in the health sciences that are available now but remain unfilled due to a skills gap.

In addition, Rush holds an annual job fair at MXC to hire community residents, and the Medical Center donates equipment that is used for the college’s health sciences programs. Rush faculty members serve on MXC’s advisory boards, and provide virtual and in-person guest lecturing at MXC. Monthly conference calls are held by MCX’s president, deans, program directors and Rush representatives from the College of Nursing, College of Health Sciences, Department of Emergency and Human Resources. Monthly telephone conferences are also held.
