Program Description

How do I make an appointment for a mammogram?
If you would like to make an appointment for a mammogram at Rush University Medical Center, call (312) 942-2027. Some insurance providers require a referral from a primary care physician for screening mammograms; call your own insurance provider to find out the requirements for your plan. If you have questions about when you should schedule a mammogram, talk with your primary care physician.

I’ve heard many conflicting reports about the benefits of screening mammography. I’m over 40. What should I do?
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the National Cancer Institute and the American Cancer Society recommend regular screening mammograms for women starting at age 40. The federal government makes a clear recommendation to women on mammography: If you are 40 or older, get screened for breast cancer with mammography every one to two years. Other leading organizations recommend screening every year after age 40.

If I perform breast self-exams regularly, why do I need a mammogram?
Mammograms can help discover abnormalities as small as the head of a pin. Something this tiny cannot be felt during a self exam. The sooner breast abnormalities are detected, the easier and more successful the treatment.

Does every woman need a mammogram?
Yes. Although we are aware of risk factors related to breast cancer, we do not know the cause. Approximately 75 percent of women who develop breast cancer have no significant risk factors. Therefore, every woman should undergo screening for breast cancer.

How should I prepare for a mammogram?
Wear comfortable clothes and avoid jewelry, deodorants, powders and creams—metallics may interfere with the accuracy of the test. For a more comfortable exam, schedule mammograms for the week after the onset of your period. And bring previous mammograms for comparison. Changes in the breast are important indicators of potential problems.

To schedule an appointment with one of the city’s best mammography teams, call (312) 942-2027. To request copies of past mammograms completed at the Rush Breast Imaging Center, call our film library at (312) 563-3008.
