Program Description

Since the early days of Presbyterian and St. Luke's hospitals, chaplains have played an integral role in the care of patients at Rush. Chaplains and ethicists are available 24 hours a day, every day of the year, to serve the needs of Rush patients and their families. The J. Hall Taylor Memorial Chapel, located on the first floor of the Kellogg Building near Elevator C, is open 24 hours a day for patients, their families and visitors. Services are held regularly at the Taylor Chapel. Call (312) 942-5571 for times.

Services Provided

Ethics Consultation Service
Ethicists help patients, families, physicians nurses and others sort through values and beliefs and mediate ethical conflicts. They also offer advice about the broad range of medical decisions that may be ethically permissible as well as those that are either prohibited or prescribed.

Chaplain Services
Chaplains at Rush come from a variety of backgrounds. The staff includes a Roman Catholic priest, a Muslim imam and a rabbi, as well as clergy representing a variety of other denominations. None of our chaplains, however, works exclusively with one faith group. They serve everyone and help people access the resources of their own spirituality or religious tradition in the process of healing.

Clinical Team

Clayton Thomason, MDiv, JD, is chairperson of the Department of Religion, Health and Human Values. Staff chaplains at Rush are certified by the Association of Professional Chaplains or the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education. Resident chaplains and interns are part of the highly esteemed program in Clinical Pastoral Education that has been operating at Rush for almost 30 years. The team of ethicists who serve on the Ethics Consultation Service all hold doctorates in the field and serve on the faculty of Rush University's Program in Ethics.
