Clinical Services at Rush Section of Neurocritical Care
Program Description

The Section of Neurocritical Care at Rush University Medical Center, is dedicated to the treatment of patients with life-threatening neurologic diseases. At Rush University Medical Center, our 28-bed Neurosciences Intensive Care Unit is managed by a core group of fellowship-trained neurointensivists, who work in close collaboration with vascular and endovascular neurologists and neurosurgeons, and anesthesiologists to provide patients with high-quality clinical care. Patients' care plans are tailored to their individual needs by a multidisciplinary team comprised of physicians, nurses, therapists and social workers. Using the latest in available technology such as hypothermia, brain tissue oxygen monitors and continuous EEG, we manage patients with the following illnesses:

  • Subarachnoid hemorrhage
  • Intracerebral  hemorrhage
  • Ischemic strokes
  • Traumatic brain injury
  • Spinal cord injury
  • Refractory seizures
  • Infections of the central nervous system
  • Neuromuscular respiratory failure
  • Guillain-Barre syndrome

An attending neurointensivist is available 24/7 to help coordinate transfer of these critically ill patients to our hospital via air or ground. Patients at Rush have the opportunity to be involved in the latest national clinical research trials.

The Unit

The Neurosciences Intensive Care Unit at Rush is a state-of-the-art specialty unit of 28 beds with advanced neuro-monitoring and neuro-therapeutic capabilities including continuous EEG, Licox brain tissue oxygen sensor, cerebral blood flow devices, and cooling devices. On-site CT scanning is available within the ICU capable of performing CT angiography and perfusion. The NSICU is staffed full time by five neurointensivists, fellows and residents from neurology, anesthesiology and neurosurgery. Our team also includes seven dedicated neurocritical care nurse practitioners who manage patients within the unit. The NSICU encompasses a closed-unit model with a dedicated ICU team providing primary care to patients. Bedside teaching rounds are conducted daily with pharmacy and nutrition in attendance.
