Peroral Endoscopic Myotomy (POEM) for the Treatment of Achalasia
This is a pilot study for a new endoscopic treatment of achalasia. The purpose of this study is to assess the safety and efficacy of peroral endoscopic myotomy, and to assess the quality of life, pain and complications of this endoscopic approach. Twenty patients will be recruited for this trial with a one-year follow-up.
You may be eligible to participate in this study if you:
- Have a diagnosis of achalasia
- Are 18-80 years of age
- Are ASA class 1-3
You will be excluded from this study if you:
- Are pregnant
- Have had any prior surgical or endoscopic treatment for achalasia
- Are taking immunosuppressive medications or are immunocompromised
- Are on anticoagulant medications or have had abnormal coagulation tests
