Annual Back to School Health Fair Offers Free Immunizations and Physicals to Help Students Get Ready for School Year
Free immunizations and physicals are among the services available at the eighth annual citywide RU Caring Back to School Health Fair on Saturday, July 28.
The event is from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Malcolm X College, 1900 W. Jackson Blvd. It's hosted by RU Caring, a community service program run by Rush University students. Co-sponsors include Alderman Bob Fioretti and the Chicago Department of Public Health.
Students of all ages are welcome to participate. Rush employees, physicians, nurses and students volunteer their time and expertise to provide school physicals, vision and hearing screenings and dental exams and update immunizations for the start of the school year. In addition, students will be able to play games and win a limited number of school supplies.
Research shows that healthy students have better attendance and perform better in school. Physicals and updated immunizations are required for students entering kindergarten, first grade, fifth grade and ninth grade (ages 5, 10 and 15 for ungraded programs). Students enrolling in Illinois schools for the first time and children up to 6 years old entering preschool are also required to have a physical exam and updated immunizations.
