The Efficacy of Cognitive Remediation for Schizophrenic Patients Stabilized on Antipsychotic Medication
We are seeking research volunteers who have cognitive difficulties (i.e., memory, concentration, reasoning, etc.) and have schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder.
Study patients will receive medical screening including a physical, some basic labs, an ECG and a psychiatric interview.
Those who meet inclusion criterion will enter the first phase of the study. During this eight-week phase, patients will begin taking the study medication and attend weekly clinical monitoring.
Those who respond to the medication will then enter the second phase of the study. At this point, patients will be randomized into two groups: half will engage in an hour of computer-based cognitive remediation exercises, followed by group discussion. The other half will participate in an hour of computer-based puzzles, followed by group discussion of healthy living.
You may be eligible to participate in this study if you:
- Are 18-55 years of age and have outpatient status
- Have a diagnosis of schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder
- Are medically stable and not currently abusing drugs or alcohol
- Have a willingness and ability to comply with study protocol procedures
