Rush University Celebrates 40th Commencement Ceremony on June 9

Rush University will recognize more than 600 graduating students at its 40th commencement ceremony on Saturday, June 9, at the UIC Pavilion in Chicago.

Larry Goodman, MD, president of Rush University and CEO of Rush University Medical Center, and Thomas Deutsch, MD, provost of Rush University and dean of Rush Medical College, will preside over the ceremony and award degrees to students graduating from the University’s four colleges.

Established in 1972, Rush University is comprised of Rush Medical College, College of Nursing, College of Health Sciences and The Graduate College.

This year’s commencement, which starts at 2 p.m., marks the 40th anniversary of Rush University as four colleges. To commemorate the anniversary and to create new traditions, all endowed chair holders will receive and wear customized engraved medallions to be worn at all future commencement ceremonies. Custom regalia showcased at last year’s ceremony will be worn again this year.

Since 1972, Rush University has awarded more than 13,000 degrees. Rush alumni are researchers, practitioners and teachers spanning the entire range of specialties and occupations in health care.

This year's commencement speaker and recipient of the Rush University Honorary Degree of Doctor of Humane Letters is Jorge O. Galante, DMSc, chairman emeritus of the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at Rush. A pioneer in the development of modern joint replacement surgery and one of the first Chicago physicians to perform a total hip implant, Galante has had a profound impact on the research and clinical practice of orthopedics.
