Claire Smith, MD, is a senior attending and professor at Rush University Medical Center in the Department of Diagnostic Radiology, and holds a conjoint appointment as professor in internal medicine. She is the section director of gastrointestinal radiology.
Smith attended St. Peter’s College in New Jersey and received her M.D. degree from Loyola University Stritch School of Medicine in 1975. She completed a residency in diagnostic radiology at Rush University Medical Center and was board-certified in 1979.
Smith’s primary interests are digestive diseases and especially pelvic floor disorders, motility and postoperative alimentary tract abnormalities. She is an expert in “four-contrast” pelvic floor imaging and small bowel enteroclysis studies. Her research interests include pelvic floor and motility disorders.
Smith was recognized with the Mark H. Lepper Society Award for outstanding teaching at Rush Medical College in 1990. She was honored as a fellow of the American College of Radiology in 1992. She has been an examiner for the American Board of Radiology since 1993 and was given a Distinguished Service Award by the ACR in 2005. In the Department of Diagnostic Radiology, she has been Teacher of the Year four times since 1993, and she received a Distinguished Service Award from the Rush Department of General Surgery in 2005.
