John F. Hibbeln, MD, is an associate professor of diagnostic imaging at Rush University Medical Center and serves as section director of informatics and director of CT imaging and cardio-vascular imaging.
He received a B.S. degree from Northwestern University in 1981 and a medical degree from Northwestern in 1983. He completed an internal medicine residency at the University of Michigan in 1986 and a fellowship in nuclear medicine there in 1987. After completing his diagnostic imaging residency at Wayne State University, he performed an MRI/CT/US fellowship at Michael Reese Hospital in Chicago. He practiced at the University of Illinois Medical Center for 10 years before joining Rush in 2000.
Hibbeln has had broad exposure in diagnostic imaging, including hepatobiliary imaging, gastrointestinal, genitourinary, vascular, obstetrical and gynecological imaging, and pulmonary imaging. He also performs maternal and fetal MRI and imaging-guided interventional procedures. He supervises the cardiac CT and virtual colonoscopy programs at Rush.
Hibbeln has taught more than 130 residents and fellows and has had six academic appointments. He has multiple peer-reviewed publications and presentations. He has served as a consultant for medical imaging corporations, quality review companies, legal issues, the Field Museum and the Shedd Aquarium. He currently serves on the board of directors of the Chicago Radiological Society and Illinois State Radiology Society and serves with the American College of Radiology. He was president of the Chicago Radiological Society from 2008 to 2009.
