Clinical Services at Rush Types of Vasculitis

Vasculitis (plural “vasculitides”): The term vasculitis is a combination of two roots: vascul, which means “vessel,” and itis, which means “inflammation.” So vasculitis is inflammation of the blood vessels. (In the same way, appendicitis is inflammation of the appendix.) The vessels are conduits that supply blood to the different organs of the body, such as the kidneys, muscles, skin, brain, lungs, etc. When vessels get inflamed, they can either dilate or collapse, leading to loss of blood supply. This may result in organ damage and loss of function. If not treated, vasculitis can have severe consequences.
