Clinical Services at Rush EEG and Evoked Potentials Lab
EEG Lab Accreditation
EEG Lab Accreditation
Program Description

The Rush EEG laboratory is one of the largest and busiest in the region. It includes an outpatient department and a state-of-the-art eight bed inpatient monitoring unit. The inpatient unit monitors simultaneous EEG and video recordings, 24 hours per day. It also provides 24-hour inpatient EEG/video monitoring of patients in Rush's Neurological Intensive Care and Pediatric Intensive Care units. The lab also is a specialized training center for EEG technicians and neurologists.

Services Provided
  • Electroencephalogram (EEG) tests,  which measure the electrical activity of the brain, often referred to as a brain-wave test. An EEG is useful in diagnosing and treating many neurological disorders.
  • Evoked potential tests measure activity from the brain, spinal cord, and nerves which result from specific sensory stimulation.

  • Somatosensory evoked potential (SSEP) tests that measure the electrical activity of the sensory pathways from the arms or legs. The test takes about 90 minutes.

  • Visual evoked potential (VEP) tests measure the electrical activity of the visual system. The test takes about 60 minutes.

  • Brainstem auditory evoked potential (BAEP) tests, which measure the electrical activity of the auditory system. The test takes about 60 minutes.

Rush physicians who supervise and interpret recordings from the lab have received special post-graduate training and are board certified or board eligible in electroencephalography and evoked potentials. Most of our technicians are certified by the American Board of Registration of Electroencephalographic and Evoked Potential Technologists, with many years of experience. The lab is accredited by the same board, having met rigorous technical, personnel and safety standards.
