Health Information Rush Among the Nation's Best

Ten Rush University Medical Center programs are ranked among the best in the nation according to the July 17 issue of U.S.News & World Report magazine. The magazine lists the top hospitals across the country for 16 medical specialties as part of the magazine's annual "America's Best Hospitals" issue.

Just 176 out of 5,189 hospitals scored high enough this year to rank in even a single specialty, according to the magazine.

No other hospital in Illinois ranks higher than Rush in three of the specialty areas. These include orthopedics (Rush is number 6 in the nation), neurology and neurosurgery (number 12 in the nation), and kidney disease (number 21 in the nation).

"Rush continues to do great work in its various programs, and these rankings are representative of the quality of care provided at Rush," says Larry J. Goodman, MD, president and CEO of Rush. "Our academic medical center has earned its place among America's best."

U.S.News & World Report revised its rankings this year by removing the geriatrics category from its list. The magazine's rationale is that geriatrics is viewed more as primary care versus specialty care treatment. Rush continues to provide the best in geriatric care in the city of Chicago, and last year, ranked 14th in the nation for geriatrics.

The rankings of other Rush programs this year are: endocrinology (number 21), pulmonary - respiratory disorders (number 23), urology (number 25), heart and heart surgery (number 29), gastroenterology - digestive disorders (number 30), cancer (number 35) and gynecology (number 40).

According to U.S.News & World Report, the purpose of the best hospitals issue is to "identify centers that take on and excel at tough procedures and conditions – rare cancers, worsening heart failure, seemingly untreatable leg artery blockages. That is why most of the institutions ranked are referral centers, where the sickest patients are sent for advanced care. Such hospitals, follow, and often pioneer, new treatment guidelines."
