Patient & Visitor services Blood Donation FAQs

Why do you need people to donate blood?
Hundreds of patients need someone to volunteer and pay it forward by donating. These patients — who are sick or undergoing transplants, cancer treatments or surgery — need blood, plasma and platelets. You are the solution when you donate.

Who can donate blood?
If you are at least 18 years old, weigh more than 110 pounds and are in general good health, you can probably donate blood.

How long does it take to donate?
Blood donation appointments take about an hour, but the actual donation part usually takes five to 10 minutes.

What happens when you donate?
You check in, fill out a donation record, then go to a private booth for screening and get a mini health physical to confirm you are healthy that day.

Is it different donating at the Rush Blood Donor Program?
Yes. When you donate with the Rush Blood Center, you know your donation is going to benefit a patient here. In addition, the process of donating is similar to other places where you might have donated, but we do have slightly different criteria for donation.

I have a friend who requires frequent blood transfusions all the time. Can I donate blood for them?
Yes. This is a directed blood donation and requires additional paperwork that the patient must fill out prior to the donation appointment.

Can my donation go to a specific individual?
Yes. This is a directed blood donation and requires additional paperwork that the patient must fill out prior to the donation appointment.

Can I donate blood to myself prior to surgery?
This is an autologous blood donation. You would need to discuss with your physician if this is an option for you when planning your surgery.
