Spousal expression of criticism/hostility and adjustment among chronic pain patients
This is an investigation of people with chronic low back pain and their spouses. In one study, couples will discuss topics that come up in their marriages, and the person with chronic pain will perform tasks involving simple movements (bending, sitting) while the spouse observes. In another study, couples will carry personal data Assistants (“Palm Pilots”) for 14 consecutive days. Five times per day, the Palm Pilots will prompt you to answer simple questions displayed on their screens. Couples may be eligible for both studies, and will receive compensation.
You may be eligible to participate in this study if you:
- Are married, and your spouse will also participate
- Have had low back pain for at least six months
- Are 18-65 years of age
You will be excluded from this study if you:
- Have cancer or rheumatoid arthritis
- Have other severe medical or psychiatric disorders
